How Do I Find my Theriotype's Color?

Okay, this one may sound crazy, but hear me out. Our theriotypes can have colors, and there is a way to find them.

Why Should We Care About What Color Our Theriotype is?

Colors have a significant influence on our identities and play a crucial role in shaping how we view ourselves and how others perceive us. Research in color psychology shows that colors affect our emotions, actions, and self-expression. For instance, studies in psychology and marketing suggest that different colors evoke specific feelings—blue tends to evoke calmness and stability, while red stirs up energy and passion. However, the significance of colors goes deeper than just their emotional impact. Our personal connections to certain colors, which may be tied to cultural meanings, personal memories, or symbolic associations, can strongly shape our self-concept.

When we consider the color of our theriotype, it’s akin to choosing a color that resonates on a soul level. Just as our favorite colors help express who we are, discovering the color of our theriotype can make that aspect of our identity feel more tangible and grounded. Whether our theriotype is a warm brown wolf, a sleek grey cat, or something more unique like a calico, the color becomes part of how we connect with our animal side. When we discover our theriotype’s color, we tune into a deeper aspect of our identity and unlock an emotional connection to a hidden part of ourselves.

Do Therians Just “Know” Their Fur Color? Or Do We Discover It?

So, first off, do we just know our color, or do we have to figure it out somehow? I feel like this is one of those things that depends on the person. Some people seem to have a gut feeling that they’ve always known their true selves deep down. They might say things like, “Yeah, I just know I’m a pale grey wolf,” or “I’ve always felt like I have spotted fur.”

For others, however, their identity may be less clear. They might experience flashes of color during their shifts or feel a connection to certain shades. It can work both ways, really. Awakening is a gradual process with many milestones along the road, and it is just one of those. I know some Therians who had to go on this whole self-discovery journey before they knew their color.

Can Phantom Shifts Help You Find Your Fur Color?

One thing I’ve noticed from talking to others (and my own experience, too) is that phantom shifts can sometimes give us a clue. Some people feel a particular shade or just “see” the color in their mind when they’re in that shift state. For example, someone told me about feeling a warm brown color whenever they were in a horse shift. They said it just felt right. Never underestimate your conscious and subconscious mind!

Can Meditation or Dreams Reveal Your Therian Color?

Alright, so this is a big one for me because I’m all about meditation and dreaming when it comes to understanding my animal side. I really believe that if you give yourself space to just be your theriotype, colors, and other details can show up naturally. Again, this may take a while until you are loose enough to be in a "flow" state where ideas just come and go in your mind, almost like a slideshow. I've also had some incredible dreams where I was totally in my animal form, and sometimes, I could even see my own fur, which was a wild experience! If you have dreams like that, pay attention to them. They might show you colors or details like fur texture or markings that feel real.

Should You Do Research on Your Species or Breed?

So here’s another thought. Let's say you feel super connected to a specific dog breed. Start looking at photos or watch videos of the specific dog and pay attention to your gut feeling. The key here is to see what resonates with you. Sometimes, it’s just a certain color pattern or a specific marking, and suddenly, you’re like, “Whoa, that’s me!” It doesn’t have to be an exact science. Follow what feels right.

What If You’re Just Drawn to Certain Colors?

You could also start looking at colors and patterns and watch how your mind shifts. Take notes in your journal and use this alongside all the other techniques to narrow down the color. Who knows, maybe you find a hidden theriotype that has never occurred to you before.

Remember, It’s Okay Not to Know Right Away

So, honestly, I think there’s no rush to figure this out. Some of us might know right away, and others might spend years exploring before something feels right. It’s all good either way. Your theriotype’s color might even shift as you grow and change – that’s normal, too.

At the end of the day, I think it’s all about what makes you feel connected to your inner animal. Don’t stress if you don’t have a “perfect” answer. Just keep exploring and trust yourself. Eventually, you’ll find what feels like you. 💜

Leonie

Hi! I'm Leonie and theriotype is (probably) irimote cat. This is a subspecies of the leopard cat that lives exclusively on the Japanese island of Iriomote. It comes out in my fierce nature but also when I find comfort being tucked in on my sofa. I enjoy making therian fandom artwork in my journal and sharing it with my friends.
